Former D.T.R. member Tomo has also joined the lineup. Gravity End, a band that exudes the spirit of American hard rock—we bring you exclusive coverage of their sensational debut live performance!
A group of defiant and reckless guys has stormed into today’s HR/HM scene, where veteran acts are vying for dominance. The band was formed in 2024. Rather than rushing into things, they chose to solidify the band’s foundation before making their move. In other words, as if their creed were to deliver a powerful impact and shock the audience with every single live performance, they suppressed their eagerness, deliberately spent two years preparing, and finally raised the banner of their activities when the time was right.
Akitaro “Ah-san” Sakurazaka, who has performed as the vocalist for ELISE and Sōtō Seiryū, launched his own media outlet called “MUSIC BEEAST” and continues to support the scene as its editor-in-chief.
Tomo, also known as Tomoyuki Kuroda, made his debut as a guitarist for D.T.R. (DIRTY TRASHROAD), a band formed primarily by Taiji Sawada (TAIJI), the former bassist for X Japan and LOUDNESS. After the band’s dissolution, he has been performing alongside heavyweights such as Akira Takasaki (LOUDNESS) and MASAKI (Animetal, Jigoku Quartet, etc.).
He performs as the bassist for Sōtō Seiryū. Known as “Shishimaru,” he is a fierce bassist who has also worked behind the scenes to nurture and manage many artists.
He performs as the drummer for ELISE and Sōtō Seiryū. Like Akitaro, he has been deeply immersed in the HR/HM scene since the ’80s. Currently, he is active as a member of Howling Star, based in Sapporo, alongside Tomohiro Sanpei (SAMPEI), the former
Gravity End’s long-awaited debut live show took place on September 6 at Cat’s Hole in Shinjuku as a band-organized event. “Gravity End presents—EVENT HORIZON Vol. 1—” featured Gravity End as the headliner, along with Hz\zLz and Misty Green. Here, we bring you coverage of Gravity End’s debut live show, which made a huge impact as the event’s closing act.
An ominous sound effect begins to play, as if signaling the start of the story. The sound of Tomo’s guitar, enhanced by a wah-wah pedal, adds even more anxiety and dread to the atmosphere. It feels as if battle-hardened warriors are rising from the grave. Then…
Tono’s drum count was the signal that completely transformed the atmosphere. Tomo’s guitar, distorted to the point of snorting, intertwines with a fierce drum roll. As if guided by that sound, Akitaro appears. In sync with the tight drum beat, Shishimaru’s bass begins to growl. With his left foot perched on the riser, Akitaro stared intently at the crowd and let his voice soar freely to the tune of “TO BE FREE,” a song that exuded the vibe of 1980s American hard rock with its heavy yet laid-back groove. Gravity End’s live show kicked off with a heavy yet razor-sharp mid-tempo number. Behind Akitaro, Tomo’s presence was particularly striking as he continuously played driving riffs and heart-pounding melodies. As the set progressed, perhaps as the musicians’ spirits soared, the roaring performance became infused with even more raw energy. Feeling that energy at his back, Akitaro—interweaving shouts into his vocals—drew the audience deeper into the band’s embrace. While the vocals and guitar each asserted their presence, they also harmonized at key moments; this interplay ensures that while the listener’s attention is drawn to each element individually, the moments when they resonate together bring a joyful, exhilarating surge of emotion.
As Tomo’s guitar struck a heart-pounding, memorable riff, the rhythm section began to layer in. Adding a pleasant, bouncy energy, the performance paints a world of grand scale and liberating freedom. This is “READY TO ROLL,” a song embodying the very essence of the American hard rock style that swept the ’80s and ’90s. As if venting every frustration, Akitaro sings the ear-pleasing melodies of the English lyrics over the dynamic performance. The catchy vocals and roaring instrumentation blend together over a rock ’n’ roll beat, lifting everyone’s spirits. On the dance floor, people weren’t just swaying—here and there, you could see people pumping their fists and letting themselves be carried away by the music. This song is packed with the impact and charm of American hard rock that leaves you feeling completely liberated. Even though we were in a dimly lit underground live house, the image that came to mind was of racing down the highway under a clear blue sky, the car radio cranked to full volume, with the accelerator pressed all the way to the floor.
During the MC segment, Akitaro engaged the crowd with some laid-back banter. I’d like to see the contrast with their performance—in a good way—as part of Gravity End’s charm.
Like slicing open the emotional surface of those it touches and pouring high-proof bourbon into the wound, Tomo’s raw and aggressive guitar riffs strike with ferocity. As those phrases give way to a melodic line that tickles the heart, the rhythm section—having ramped up the BPM—begins to anchor the foundation with a heavy, powerful performance. “STANDING STILL” is a song that delivers the kind of heart-pounding impact you’d expect from hard rock. Against a backdrop of raw yet vibrant playing, an impassioned Akitaro took the stage, making full use of his vocal range—from deep tones to shouts—to deliver a catchy song that resonated with his fluctuating emotions. While the vocals and guitar each assert their own memorable melodies, the beats delivered by the rhythm section—one of Gravity End’s greatest strengths—far from neutralizing these two distinct personalities, instead highlight each one through their playing. Despite the rough-hewn, unpolished performance, both ears and hearts are drawn into the groove created by the interplay of these sharp, assertive elements. My heart races at the impact of this hard rock ’n’ roll—born from each member asserting themselves and clashing within a foundation of mutual trust. That’s why so many fists were raised high from the floor. I also sensed the reason for this band’s appeal—and the touch of old-school hard rock—in the intensity of Tomo’s performance, as he unleashed a relentless barrage of sound from start to finish, including his guitar solos.
The way the performance flowed from Tomo’s dynamic closing riff into the guitar solo section also evoked the atmosphere of classic hard rock band concerts. Tomo unleashed a melancholic melody at breakneck speed, using his performance as a bridge to the next song.
A melancholic yet passionate Spanish-style performance began to resonate throughout the venue. As if drawn to that sound, Akitaro began singing “WITHIN MY HEART.” The acoustic guitar playing in the background intertwined with Tomo’s electric guitar, deepening the sense of melancholy. Akitaro immersed himself in that ensemble, embracing it tightly with his own melancholic vocals. It was striking to see Akitaro sing with such intensity, directly projecting his surging emotions. By deliberately limiting this performance to just the two of them, they demonstrated—in their own unique way—both the depth of Gravity End as a band and their respect for American hard rock, in the best possible sense.
During the MC segment, it was announced that “Gravity End presents—EVENT HORIZON Vol. 2—” would be held at Cat’s Hole in Shinjuku on January 31, featuring PSYCHO SKULL from Hong Kong, Gravity End, and one other band.
The show moved into its second half. Right from the start, “MIRROR REFLECTS” pounced, baring the fangs of its aggressive sound. The audience swayed their bodies and raised their fists in sync with Tono’s hard-hitting beats. Shishimaru’s bass also continued to deliver a thick, rich sound while staying in sync with the beat. On top of that, Tomo kept boosting the performance he was driving, occasionally weaving in beautiful melodies. Akitaro’s vocals, delivered with passion in every single word, remained in perfect sync with the beats laid down by the rhythm section. As the song gradually built in intensity and asserted itself more forcefully, one could sense the venomous spirit of American hard rock. Skillfully varying the tempo and creating an atmosphere that was both dignified and thrilling, the performance charged forward. And then…
Gravity Endは最後に、この日一番疾走感を持った『DAY BY DAY』を叩き付けた。
To close out the show, Gravity End delivered “DAY BY DAY,” the most high-energy track of the night. Over Tono’s sharp, rapid-fire drumbeat and Shishimaru’s thunderous bass lines, Tomo’s guitar unleashed a free-spirited, fast-paced melody, while Akitaro, leaning forward with both body and spirit, sang with a powerful voice, driven by his surging emotions. The relentless impact of hard rock ’n’ roll continued to radiate heat. As they kept ratcheting up the intensity and painting a scene of frenzy across the dance floor, Gravity End’s live show came to a close.
Their next show is “Gravity End presents—EVENT HORIZON Vol. 2—” on January 31 at Cat’s Hole in Shinjuku. Until then, please look forward to it.
